New addition published 1863 with considerable additions, a detailed work on the animal kingdom with 44 steel engravings hand coloured and 500 smaller engravings in the text. Book is complete but a few pages are loose, a few occasional light marksand some browning to endpapers. Front blank endpaper has some loss to top 6 inches wide by 3 inches deep and previous owners name on it. Binding is sound but a little loose, rear inner hinge looks as if it may have been repaired a while ago, front inner hinge the paper has split but webbing of binding is sound. Outer boards are worn and marked, gold decoration is worn. Outer reddish brown boards are a little marked and worn on edges, the cloth covering is split along front hinge but the binding is solid. Label on front board is a little marked and worn. Second edition 287 pages in bright clean condition, hand made untrimmed paper with full page B/w illustrations plus decorative borders around the text. Endpapers are browned with neat inked former owner's details on endpapers, there are two different names which I cannot decipher but from the style of writing and the ink fading they were written a while ago and could be known people from the Club. Front inner hinge is sound but where paper is split in places webing is showing and is a little loose but still sound and will not come away. Vellum boards are dusty and discoloured with a few marks, gold lettering and gold tooling on inner edges. Though not perfect, a pleasing copy of this scarce book SEE IMAGE. Special edition of this book, bound in vellum with gold lettering. Book states there were only twelve copies printed of which ten are for sale, this is number 9.Translated from the French by Geoffrey Whitworth. There are twenty woodcut illustrations by Albert Delstanche, these are pulled by hand and each signed by the artist, real signatures not facsimiles.Illustrations are clean and protected by tissue guards, other pages have occasional foxing spots as do a few tissue guards this has protected the illustrations only very slight very light tiny spots on the illustrations, half title page is a little more foxed than the others. Endpapers are lightly foxed and outer edges of untrimmed pages are browned. Outer vellum covers are a little yellowed on edges and on spine, rear bottom left corner has small crease, top edges of pages are gold, this is dull and worn away in places,some light marking and a little dusty from age.
